Joseph J. Imburgia
1944-11-16 2012-02-29He was born in Wareham, Mass., in 1944. He was the eldest son of Betty Jean Thomas Imburgia King and the late Joseph J. Imburgia Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan R. Imburgia of Yorktown; his sons, Joseph J. Imburgia of Yorktown, and David S. Imburgia and his wife, Ange McCormack Imburgia of Grafton; his daughters, Lesley Jeanette Mink and her husband, J.R. Mink Jr. and their two sons, Jacob A. Mink and Caleb J. Mink of Lynchburg, and Mary Christina Miller and her husband, Charles V. Miller IV and their children, Charles V. King, Jr. and his wife, Frances King of Chattanooga; his sister, Jamie Kellam and her husband, Robert Kellam of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was proud to serve in the USAF during the Vietnam War, where he served three tours in Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines with the 1st Mobile Communications Group and "Rivet Top." As an entrepreneur, he was the owner and operator of Process Control Services, Ltd., in Seaford, Va., for 30 years. Most recently, he was a senior designer at Whitman Requardt and Associates. He was an active volunteer his entire life, contributing to the community through coaching the Seaford Bulldogs, York County Volunteer Rescue Squad, REACT, MARS, CERT and former VP of the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club (KI4LXT). He was an assistant section emergency coordinator with ARES, volunteer examiner with W5YI as a volunteer examiner coordinator, a member of Hampton Roads Emergency Management Committee, volunteer spotter for the National Weather Service Skywarn system, and a fixture of the Marlbank Cove Home Owners Association for over 12 years. He was a teacher, mentor and friend to many. After decades of continual volunteer service, Joe's likely only regret would be that he didn't have more time to contribute. Joe knew no strangers in his life here. He was quick witted and always ready with a corny joke that never fell flat. His smile and presence will surely be missed by more people than can ever be expressed.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Amory Funeral Home, in Grafton, Va. The funeral will follow at 3:30 p.m., with a reception immediately afterward at the Marlbank Cove Clubhouse. A graveside service will be held at noon Monday, March 5, 2012, in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Va.
Flowers are welcome or memorial donation may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
I was going thru the video of the 1963 reunon of the Norview calss of'63 and at the end they were showing at list of people "no longer with us'. I was a graduate of Norview but in 1965. I was a fellow band member with him. While most in the "sousaphone/tuba" section looked down on me and gave a rationing all the time, I was one of those that the Norfolk Ciy School System kept at Norview Jr. for their freshman year of high school, those from other parts of the Norview district were allowed to statrt 9 th grade at the high school year so the thought they were much better than of us who could not. Joe took me under his wing as a senoir band member and because of his kindness I did not quit. He got to meet my family who lived in Fox Hall, my father who owned a sign shop and Joe got along well at the ball games and the one year Joe and my father got to spend together at the Xmas tree lot. You don't actually think about people who you have met back in school, Brent Coltraine was a family friend and a boyhood frien and then he was gone too soon. At our 45th reunion in 2010, who would've thought I'd live that long, I saw the little cansdles with peoples names on them and then I remembered I was first married to a Camille (Cami) Randolph in 1967-1971 and had heard from my daughter, this is my 3rd. marriage, it has lasted 38 yrs. Guess you just gotta find the right one, huh? that she had died. I told someone there at the reunion and they said they would have a candle for her at the next one. Joe hung around with anoter fellow who also was a senior in1963 and was in the band and he too did the same as Joe did in regards to keeping me in band. Joe once told me "Lee those other guys are scared of you as far as musical talent is concerened, you are so much better than them, and don't think that you weren't well known by our director,Mr.Ricardo, before you came from the jr. high school. He wanted to have you here last year, had you been here last year you would have been the "section leader" and not the jerk who is there, and that is what they have against you' I will always be grateful to what he did for me. I'm just sorry that I never got the chance to talk to him later in life, he must have been a fine person by just reading his credits in his obit. Mine will not be anywhere near that. Lee Barry Norview Class of '65, but a friend of Joe Imburgia Norview Class of '63. Go Pilots. You may e-mail me if you wish, I'd like to hear more of Joe. My father died in Sept.,1993 and my mother in Sept.,1999.
